Christian Heresiologists used "Ebionite" as an umbrella catch-all term for any group which combined their love for Jesus with Jewish observances regardless of how different those groups might have been from each other. The book, "Jewish Christianity Saints, heretics and history" by Hans-Joachim Schoeps is a seminal 20th-century work that systematically separates standard "vulgar Ebionism" (purely legalistic) from "Gnostic Ebionism" (the Pseudo-Clementine theology).
Jewish Ebionites
Standard Ebionites were simple Jews not Noahides nor Christians nor even Muslims. They rejected the concept of virgin birth believing that Jesus is the natural son of Joseph and Mary and that he was not divine but a regular Jew who achieved communion with the spirit of HaShem in the same way that any Jew can, ie as a result of his diligentlce in religious observance and Torah study. They focused on his teachings and role as a teacher not as a Saviour. For them, Jesus was a personal Messiah, the Messiah Ben Joelseph of his generation and the Jewish Messiah for the nations but not the pre-existent Messiah. Their men were circumcised and they strictly adhered to Jewish Law which they believed was necessary for salvation. They preserved the Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew. They were probably a branch of the Essenes (Beit Hillel) and in effect are no different from many Oral Torah Observant Jews throughout the centuries who have distinguished Jesus of Nazareth from Magdalena's son and have believed that he was a righteous teacher with prophetic powers like many of the Scribal Pharisee were. Elijah Soloveitchik certainly belongs to this category.
Ebionite Noahides
Those simple and basically Orthodox Jewish Ebionites must be understood as distinct from the uncircumcised Noahide group known as Ebionite Gnostics, the first in a long chain of Messianic Hebrew Baptists who have preserved sabbath observance as Noahides throughout the ages. It should be assumed that unless stated otherwise, any group practicing Noahide Judaism throughout history has kept Sabbath (as every Ger Toshav must) unless explicitly stated otherwise.
The difference between Standard Ebionites and "Gnostic Ebionites" (often associated with Elcesans and writings like the Pseudo-Clementines) centers on how they viewed the physical world and how salvation is achieved. [1, 2, 3]
While both groups remained Torah-observant and accepted Jesus as Messiah in one way or another, they held fundamentally different theological frameworks. [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]
For Gnostic Ebionites the pimary Route to Salvation is spiritual knowledge combined with ascetic observance of Sabbath. Matter is eternal, forming the "body of God," split into good (Sky) and estranged (Earth). Their Christology (Nature of Jesus) was Angelic Mandate ie Celestial Flesh: Jesus was a cosmic eternal spirit appearing throughout history. With regards to the Torah they believed parts of it were irrelevant for Noahides and rejected animal sacrifices. Their main ritual Focus was Sabbath and frequent, repetitive baptisms for purification and washing away tumah.
Main Distinctions Explained
With regards to the Purpose of Jesus
* Standard Ebionites viewed Jesus as a normal human prophet whose perfect obedience to the Torah made him worthy of being chosen as a personal Messiah Ben Joseph for his generation and for the nations.
* Gnostic Ebionites believed Jesus was the ultimate manifestation of the pre-existent and eternal, divine spirit (likened to an Archangel) that had previously incarnated in figures like Adam Kadmon and to Moses. [1, 5, 11, 12, 13]
Attitude Toward the Hebrew Bible and Sacrifices
* Standard Ebionites fully embraced Jewish tradition, centering their lives on Jerusalem and the temple structure until the temple was destroyed.
* Gnostic Ebionites believed that Ezra the Scribe had a lying pen. They avoided meat on Sabbaths and rejected animal sacrifices, arguing that the earthly temple had been aboloshed. [11, 12, 14, 15, 16]
Departure from Mainstream Gnosticism
However, although labelled as Gnostic, the Ebionite Gnostics were highly unique. Unlike mainstream Gnostics (who hated the God of the Old Testament and claimed he was an evil lesser deity called the Demiurge), Gnostic Ebionites did not separate the Creator God from the Supreme God. They still worshipped the God of the old Testament, but viewed the universe through a lens of cosmic dualism, syzygies (male/female spiritual pairings), and mystical emanations. [1, 3, 17, 18, 19]
If you would like to know more you should consult the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies and Recognitions: These are 4th-century Noahide writings that represent the actual theology of these Gnostic-leaning Ebionites. They feature Saint Peter fighting the student of Simon Magus and detail a highly unique Jewish-Gnostic worldview. You can read the text online through the Early Christian Writings archive.
